The Frozen Apple Set For Nov. 26 vs. New Hampshire

NEW YORK — The Cornell University men's hockey team will return to the "World's Most Famous Arena" for the third edition of The Frozen Apple, Cornell University's Meakem*Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education Andy Noel announced today. The Big Red will take on the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, November 26 at Madison Square Garden. The non-conference game will mark the sixth consecutive season and the eighth time in the last 10 years that Cornell has played on the storied ice in Manhattan.

Tickets for The Frozen Apple will go on sale at noon Monday, May 23 directly through Cornell's athletic ticket site (http://www.cornellbigredtickets.com) or through Ticketmaster, with the best selection for Cornell fans available through CornellBigRedTickets.com. Fans will have the opportunity to buy either the best available tickets or tickets in the Cornell University Fan Section.

This will be Cornell's third appearance in The Frozen Apple, following victories against Michigan in 2012 and Penn State in 2014. The Big Red has also competed in five Red Hot Hockey matchups with Boston University in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015, which ignited a renaissance for college hockey at Madison Square Garden.

"We are really excited to play UNH at The Frozen Apple. They are always a competitive team with great fans and one of the best coaches in the country in Dick Umile," said Mike Schafer, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey at Cornell. "We look forward to the Wildcats' fans and UNH alumni joining the Lynah Faithful at such a historic venue."

This will be the 27th meeting between the two programs since 1941, when they first met at historic 1932 Rink-Jack Shea Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y. The teams were both a part of the fabric for the ECAC's early days before New Hampshire became a charter member of Hockey East in 1984. Since then, Cornell and New Hampshire have met three times in the NCAA tournament — including the Big Red's last trip to the Frozen Four in 2003.

"We are very excited to bring our program to Madison Square Garden and play a team with great tradition like Cornell," said Dick Umile, who is entering his 27th season as the head coach at New Hampshire. "We have a big alumni base in New York and are very happy to give them a chance to come and watch the Wildcats play."

Cornell has claimed two national championships (1967, 1970), 12 ECAC Hockey championships and seven NCAA tournament appearances in the last 14 years. Many members of the Big Red have gone on to forge careers in the National Hockey League, including the likes of Hall of Fame inductees Ken Dryden and Joe Nieuwendyk, plus current NHLers Matt Moulson (Buffalo Sabres), Ben Scrivens (Montreal Canadiens), Colin Greening (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Riley Nash (Carolina Hurricanes).

"For nearly 10 years, fans of Cornell University hockey have been filling up Madison Square Garden, and we are excited to host this year's 'Frozen Apple' between the Big Red and the University of New Hampshire on Nov. 26," said Joel Fisher, Madison Square Garden's executive vice president, Marquee Events. "College hockey has become an important franchise for Madison Square Garden and we're thrilled to add this marquee matchup to our college hockey lineup."
