ITHACA, N.Y. — Women's Squash Head Coach Julee Devoy announced today that three freshmen will join the team for the 2016-17 season. Colby Gallagher, Lucy Martin and Madison Miles will join a Big Red squad that returns 10 letterwinners from last season. Cornell has finished sixth or seventh in the top flight of the College Squash Association's National Championships in each of the last eight seasons.
 
Gallagher was ranked as high as 31st nationally in the US Squash GU19 Division competing out of the Philadelphia Squash Racquets Association. She competed for five years with The Episcopal Academy, earning all-league first team honors after her senior season. Gallagher also competed with the field hockey and lacrosse teams and was EA's 2016 recipient of the Inter-Ac Athletic Director's Award, which is given annually to a multi-sport athlete based on their dedication to their team and school, demonstration of leadership and sportsmanship.
 
Based at Heights Casino Squash in her hometown of Brooklyn, Martin's final GU19 Division national ranking was 20th. She served as a co-captain alongside her brother of a coed team at Packer Collegiate Institute that typically competed against boys' team. Martin helped the squad finish ninth in the boys division at the US Squash High School Nationals in 2015. She is a four-time recipient of the US Squash Scholar Athlete Award.
 
Miles joins the Big Red with a final GU19 Division national ranking of 18th. She competed from the top positions in both squash and tennis at Covenant of the Sacred Heart in Connecticut. In her three seasons with the squash team, she was twice named the team's most valuable player and also earned all-league honors after her freshman season. She also won a regional title, three league titles and was once named the most valuable player on the tennis team.
 
Seniors Sydney Francis and Rachel Scherman will serve as captains for the Big Red this season. The team's schedule is expected to be released later this month.
