BARCELONA, Spain -- The Cornell men's basketball team closed out its 10-day trip through Spain with a perfect 3-0 record after a 72-69 win over Sant Julia Select on August 18. The Big Red rallied from a six-point halftime deficit and pulled out a win in the game's final four minutes for the second straight contest.
Troy Whiteside scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished off three assists,
Stone Gettings had 13 points, eight boards and four assists and
Matt Morgan registered 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Big Red.
David Onuorah had 10 rebounds and both
Robert Hatter and
Kyle Brown chipped in eight points apiece.
For the third straight game, Cornell limited its opponent to well under 40 percent shooting, as Sant Julia Select connected on just 32 percent of its shots overall and suffered through a 12-of-44 shooting night from beyond the 3-point arc.
Sant Julia Select led by three with the ball with less than a minute to play, but Cornell responded late for the second straight contest. Hatter hit a pair of free throws, then dished off for the go-ahead basket with less than 30 seconds remaining, with Morgan putting the visitors ahead for good. A defensive stop led to a
Stone Gettings rebound, and the sophomore hit a pair of free throws. Sant Julia hit a deep 3-pointer that would have tied the game, but it was waved off after being clearly after the buzzer.
With minutes nearly evenly split among the 13 players who saw action on the trip, Morgan led the team in scoring (14.0 ppg.), rebounding (7.0 rpg.) and steals (1.7 spg.), while
Robert Hatter (13.3 ppg., 6.7 rpg., 3.7 apg.) also filled the stat sheet. Gettings (9.3 ppg., 4.3 rpg., 3.3 apg.) and
Troy Whiteside (7.0 ppg., 5.3 rpg., 1.7 apg.) ranked third and fourth among the team's top scorers. None averaged more than 25 minutes per game.
