US Lacrosse Announces Opening Of Richie Moran Hall of Fame Gallery

SPARKS, Md. — The weekend of Sept. 10-11 will be an exciting one for the Cornell lacrosse family, as three former Big Red will play a large part in the US Lacrosse Grand Opening celebration weekend. The national governing body of men's and women's lacrosse will open a new facility – including the Richie Moran Hall of Fame Gallery.  To celebrate the event, the U.S. men's senior team, featuring Rob Pannell '13, will play an exhibition game. The weekend will be capped with the dedication of the 9/11 Memorial, honoring the more than 60 individuals connected to the sport of lacrosse, including Cornell Hall of Famer Eamon McEneaney '77, died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

One of the most recognizable names in men's lacrosse, Moran succeeded the legendary Ned Harkness as the head men's lacrosse coach at Cornell University in 1969 and went on to become a legend himself. He led the Big Red for 29 seasons and won three national championships (1971, 1976, 1977) in the processes. His teams won 15 Ivy League championships, including seven straight from 1974 to 1980, and turned in three national runner-up performances, losing in the title game in 1978, 1987 and 1988. Moran also set an NCAA record as he guided his teams to 42 consecutive victories from 1976-78 and an Ivy League record 39 straight conference wins from 1973-1979.

During his tenure with the Big Red, Moran was named the USILA Coach of the Year three times (1971, 1977, 1987) the USILA Man of the Year (1975), and served as the head coach of Team USA in the 1978 World Games.

In 2012, he received the prestigious "Spirit of Tewaaraton" award, which is presented to an individual involved in the sport of lacrosse, who nobly reflects the finest virtues exemplified in the game, and who, over the course of his or her life, has made a significant contribution to society and to the lives of others. In May 2016, Moran was inducted into the inaugural class of the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Hall of Fame

Grand Opening Celebration Weekend
The men's intra-squad scrimmage is part of a tripleheader on Sept. 11. The day opens with the U.S. women's team at 10 a.m., features the U.S. men's team at 1 p.m. and closes with a special exhibition between the lacrosse teams from the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) at 4 p.m.

Tickets for the tripleheader are available for just $8 at http://shop.uslacrosse.org.

The men's and women's national teams will also hold clinics for youth and high school players on Saturday, Sept. 10. More information is available at https://shop.uslacrosse.org/products/national-team-youth-clinic

The new facility is the result of a $15 million capital campaign entirely funded by private donors. The IWLCA Building at US Lacrosse National Headquarters is the centerpiece of the project. The three-level 45,000 square foot structure hosts expanded office and meeting space for the US Lacrosse staff, the Crum Family Education and Training Center, and locker rooms. A new National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum, featuring the Richie Moran Hall of Fame Gallery, opens during the weekend festivities.

The building overlooks William G. Tierney Field, which will be the training home for the U.S. National Teams Program. The intimate, lighted facility boasts a permanent seating area for 500 fans and berms surround the field that will allow for additional spectators. GreenFields, a world leader in artificial turf systems, installed its state-of-the-art MX Trimension woven turf and woven Sine pad along with a TPE infill for the playing surface. Just above the seating area to Tierney Field is the Henry A. Rosenberg Jr. Promenade, which includes The Creator's Game statue sculpted by Jud Hartmann that was moved from the old US Lacrosse headquarters. The promenade also includes 21 pillars honoring college lacrosse programs from around the country.

Prior to the FDNY-NYPD game, the 9/11 Memorial located adjacent to Tierney Field will be dedicated. More than 60 individuals connected to the sport of lacrosse died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
