PHILADELPHIA — The men's tennis team dominated in its first action of the season on Friday in the first day of the Penn Invitational. The three-day event consists of 10 teams pitted against each other in singles and doubles, though no team scores are kept. Cornell won all nine of its singles matches on Friday and three of its four doubles matches. All but one contest was against opponents from Georgetown.
The Big Red's day started with singles matches, with seniors
Dylan Brown,
Bernardo Casares Rosa and
Colin Sinclair, junior
Karim Arem, and freshman
Al Hill winning in straight sets. Senior
Chris Vrabel, sophomore
Maverick Lin, and freshman
Rohan Sikka all won in super tiebreakers against competitors from the Hoyas, and freshman
Joseph McAllister prevailed, 6-0, 4-6, (10-5), against Penn's Dan Harris.
Later on in doubles, the 2015 All-Ivy League second team tandem of Casares Rosa and Vrabel started its season strong with a 6-2 victory. Arem and Brown also teamed up to win their match, 6-0, and Hill and McAllister won an extra match in a tiebreaker.
On Saturday, the Big Red is scheduled to compete in singles against Furman and in doubles against Old Dominion, which finished last season ranked 48th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Another portion of the Big Red is competing this weekend in the qualifying draw of the International Tennis Federation's Canada F9 Futures event in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Freshmen Lev Kozakov and
Pietro Rimondini are scheduled to play in firsr-round qualifying matches on Saturday, while junior
Daniel Grunberger has earned a bye into the second round of qualifying and will debut in the event on Sunday.
