Gesualdi's First Team Nod Highlights Seven All-Ivy Picks

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell football team earned seven All-Ivy League nods, including a unanimous first-team selection for senior safety Nick Gesualdi, when the conference awards were announced on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Nickolas Null was the second-team place-kicker and honorable mention punter, senior linebacker Kurt Frimel and junior offensive lineman Jay Edward Keating were second-team picks and junior DJ Woullard and sophomore David Jones, both defensive backs, were honorable mention team members.

Gesualdi is a repeat unanimous selection on the first team, becoming the first Cornell defensive player to be placed on the first team in consecutive years since Chris Zingo '94 in 1992 and 1993. He ranked second on team in tackles (60), leading the team in solo stops (42), and was third in the Ivy League with three interceptions (55th nationally). Gesualdi was second in the conference with 10 passes defended, a mark that was 57th nationally. He was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after the win at Princeton when he registered six tackles, two pass breakups and an interception. The team captain had an interception in the season finale at Penn, giving him 14 for his career – the most by a Big Red player in 68 years and second on the school's all-time list. The Big Red defense led the Ivy League in fewest passing yards allowed, a mark that ranked 32nd nationally. He also closed his career as the 13th player in school history with 250 tackles.

Null was a second-team selection at place-kicker and an honorable mention pick as the punter, becoming the first Cornell player to earn multiple spots on the All-Ivy team since Rashad Campbell in 2001 (first team return specialist, second team defensive back). A four-time Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week, he finished third in the Ivy League in punting average (40.4), a mark that ranked 45th nationally. Null took over as the team's primary place-kicker midway through the season and was 4-of-5 on field goals and 6-of-6 on PAT attempts, while putting all 17 kickoffs through the end zone for touchbacks (excluding one on-sides kick attempt). His 17 touchbacks in five games were more than half the teams in the league had for the season. Null's signature moment came when he drilled the game-winning 43-yard field goal with 0:48 to play at Princeton. He had a school record seven punts downed inside the 20 – all downed inside the 15, with three inside the 10 - in a field position game at Dartmouth. On 70 total kicks (kickoffs and punts), he allowed only 53 total return yards.

Frimel, who joined Gesualdi as a defensive captain, led the Big Red and ranked fourth in the Ivy League in tackles for loss (9.5). He had 55 tackles, two sacks, two pass breakups and a forced fumble in nine games. The CoSIDA Academic All-District selection was a two-year starter and letter winner who compiled 148 tackles, 16.5 for a loss and 4.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and four pass breakups. Frimel had three tackles for a loss in games against Delaware and Colgate, posting a pair of sacks against the Patriot League champion Raiders among 10 tackles. Frimel forced a fumble and had seven total stops with one for a loss against Ivy champ Yale.

Keating took over at center, starting all 10 games and powering a rejuvenated offensive line that helped increase the team's rushing average 25.0 yards per game over last season. The group allowed just 10 sacks as a unit over the final seven games while posting 163.7 rushing yards per game over that same span. The Big Red's 14 rushing touchdowns were the most by a Big Red team in a single season since 2007.

Jones and Woullard both were outstanding at corner during the season, each earning their first All-Ivy nods. Jones tied for Ivy League in interceptions (four, 23rd nationally), with all four picks coming in Ivy League games to pace the circuit. He saved his best for last, tying a school record for INTs in a game (three) against Penn. Despite only starting in half of the team's games, he was fourth in the conference in passes defended (nine - five pass breakups and four interceptions) and totaled 28 tackles. Also the team's primary kick returner, he ranked fourth in the conference in kick return average (22.4), the best mark at Cornell since 2013, and 48th nationally. Woullard started all 10 games at corner, posting 31 tackles. The two-year starter also had an interception and six pass breakups. He was often matched up with the team's top receiver and had three pass breakups at Dartmouth, an interception at Princeton and six tackles at Delaware.

Cornell will return five of its seven 2017 All-Ivy picks when it attempts to build on this season's fifth-place Ivy finish (3-7, 3-4 Ivy) next fall.
