Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls to Binghamton in OT

ITHACA, N.Y. – For the second time in three days, the Big Red women's basketball team took an opponent to overtime but came out empty-handed, as Binghamton pulled away in the extra stanza to take the 66-58 victory tonight in Newman Arena. In a game that featured 16 lead changes and 10 ties, the largest lead for either team was the eight-point margin of victory by the Bearcats.

Cornell (2-7) was led for the third consecutive game, and sixth time this season, by Samantha Widmann. The sophomore guard finished with 16 points to go along with seven rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocked shots. Junior Samantha Clement matched a career-high with 13 points for her third consecutive double-digit performance and grabbed a career- and team-high eight rebounds, while freshman Halley Miklos had her best game of the season with career highs in points (11), rebounds (8) and steals (2).

Binghamton (7-4) was led by Imani Watkins' 36 points, while Rebecca Carmody finished with a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double.

The Big Red shot .318 overall (21-66) and .348 from beyond the arc (8-23), while holding the Bearcats to .304 from the floor (21-69) and a mere .222 from 3-point range (6-27). Binghamton got a big boost from the charity stripe, knocking down 18-of-22, compared to Cornell's 8-of-12 performance.

Cornel held the edge in rebounding (49-48) and assisted on 14-of-21 baskets, but also had three more turnovers than the visitors (19-16). Both teams had 10 steals.

Binghamton got out to an early six point lead (8-2) less than four minutes into the contest, but the Big Red used some tough defense and a trey by Danielle Jorgenson to open up a 6-0 run to knot the game at 8-8. From there, neither team would lead by more than three points until a 3-pointer from Clement put the Big Red up, 37-33, at the 4:09 mark of the third quarter. The lead was short-lived and Binghamton eventually took its own four-point advantage (47-43) with 8:11 to play in regulation. The Bearcats would take three more leads down the stretch, but each time Cornell answered.

A pair of made free throws by Jorgenson handed the Big Red a 58-55 lead with 22 seconds to go in the fourth, but Jasmine Sina was fouled attempting a three-pointer with 19 ticks on the clock and hit all three to knot the game for the 10th and final time.

Cornell is back in action on Thursday, Dec. 21 as it travels to Philadelphia to take on Drexel at 1:00 p.m.
