PHILADELPHIA – Cornell senior
Victoria Wines became the first four-time All-Ivy fencer in program history when she finished just outside the medals this afternoon at the 2017 Ivy League Fencing Round Robin, held at the Tse Ping-Cheng Cheung Ling Sports Center in Philadelphia.
Wines finished fourth overall in the women's epee competition, despite posting two more wins (13) than the third place finisher. Over the course of the two-day competition, Wines went 13-5, with the third best touch differential in the field ( 17), but her win percentage of .733 fell .011 shy of the bronze.
Gabriella Zusin, a second-team All-Ivy selection a year ago, finished two places outside conference honors with the Big Red's second-best finish of the day, taking eighth in the women's foil competition with a record of 9-9.
As a team, the Big Red finished in fifth place overall with a 2-4 record, picking up wins over Yale and Brown. Cornell has now won six consecutive meetings with the Bulldogs and has beaten the Bears five times in a row.
COACHES CORNER - DARIA SCHNEIDER
Congratulations to our seniors
Abigail Forth and Vicki Wines, who became Cornell's first four-time All-Ivy fencer, on their last Ivy League Championships. We fought through injury and illness to fence some great touches in tough matches but struggled to convert strong fencing into wins. In some high pressure situations we also struggled to execute the things we practice in the gym each day. We have a lot of talented young fencers on our team right now so we are in a good position to build on our experiences here, if we take the lessons to heart. We are excited to have qualified at least 10 fencers to Regional Championships and look forward to preparing to compete more consistently at that competition.
DAY ONE RECAP
The Big Red sat in sixth place overall with a record of 1-3 at the end of the first day of competition. Cornell earned a hard-fought 14-13 win over Yale, but dropped decisions to No. 1 Princeton (21-6), No. 2 Columbia (24-3), and No. 9 Harvard (17-10).
DAY TWO RECAP
Cornell opened the second day of competition with a solid victory over Brown, downing the Bears 18-9, thanks in large part to a dominating 7-2 performance by the epee squad. The Big Red closed the day with a 22-5 loss to No. 4 Penn.
