Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

#8/8 Women's Lacrosse Blows By Binghamton, 17-3

ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's lacrosse team used nine-straight unanswered goals to cruise to a 17-3 win over Binghamton on Tuesday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The win was the seventh straight for the Big Red and moves Cornell to 8-1 (3-0 Ivy) on the season while Binghamton drops to 5-7 (1-0 AE).

Sophomore Sarah Phillips led Cornell with four goals while seniors Amie Dickson – on four assists – and Catherine Ellis – on three goals and one assist – each had four points in the offensive outpouring.

Ellis and senior Kristy Gilbert each scooped up three ground balls for the Big Red while four different players recorded three draw controls each. Cornell led Binghamton in shots (38-14), ground balls (20-13), and draw controls (16-6).

Despite the large margin in the final score, Cornell didn't find the back of the net in the early going, thanks in large part to Emma Jehle making four saves for the Bearcats in the first five minutes of play.

The Big Red finally broke through 5:55 into the match when Phillips converted a free-position attempt for her first goal of the day. It was Phillips that made it 2-0 when Dickson laced a pass from the top of the fan that found Phillips at the left post for a low finish into the right side of the net.

Cornell then got goals from sophomore Tomasina Leska, senior Christie Raymond, and freshman Caroline Allen to make it 5-0 nearing the midway point of the first half.

Phillips' third and fourth goals of the afternoon and Ellis' first and second gave Cornell a 9-0 lead with just over 11 minutes to play in the opening stanza. It was the second time in less than two weeks that the Big Red scored nine unanswered goals and the third time in the past three seasons.

The Bearcats ended Cornell's scoring run with 6:16 to play in the first half but Gilbert's 17th score of the year to made it 10-1 at the break.

Binghamton scored 33 seconds into the second half but Dickson – who had assisted on three of the first five goals of the game – got her fourth assist just 22 seconds later when she dished a pass to Ellis near the top of the crease for a shot into the top corner right of the net.

Junior Ida Farinholt's fifth of the season with 28:09 to play gave Cornell a 12-2 lead and started the running clock. Binghamton did find the net for a third goal but junior Taylor Reed, Raymond, Leska, Allen and Craig all added scores over the final 25 minutes of play to keep the clock running and give Cornell the 17-3 win.

Senior Renee Poullott (8-1) finished with seven saves while sophomore Samantha Nielsen finished with one save in 11:03 of relief.

Jehle (5-7) made 17 saves for the Bearcats while Rebecca Golderman had two goals.

The Big Red's 8-1 standing ties last year's program record 8-1 start to the season, which came after a record-setting 8-0 start to the season.

Cornell will welcome Brown to Schoellkopf Field on Saturday for a 1 p.m. Ivy League battle.
