ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell University ranks among the best according to the annual NCAA Division I Academic Progress Report (APR) for 2015-16. The APR measures semester-by-semester records for every individual team in Division I with regard to each team members' continuing eligibility, retention and progress toward graduation. Cornell had seven teams honored and five with perfect scores.
Since the NCAA started releasing the numbers, Cornell has had a total of 113 teams among 21 different varsity sports honored with public recognition. Two sports (football and men's golf) have been publicly recognized each year since the APR was first released for the 2004-05 season and are among just 93 teams across the country with that accomplishment. This year, the Big Red had men's basketball, football, men's golf, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, men's soccer and men's tennis were honored.
The NCAA "commends" teams that have APR scores in the top 10 percent within their sport, with the minimum necessary score ranging from 975 to a perfect mark of 1000 depending on the range of team scores within that sport. A total of 106 Ivy League teams were "commended" for an average of 13.3 teams per school. Ivy teams comprised 8.8 percent of the 1,203 teams honored from across the Division I ranks. The score is based on a four-year period that includes the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
The APR awards two points each term to student-athletes who meet academic-eligibility standards and who remain with the institution. A team's APR is the total points earned by the team at a given time, divided by the total points possible.
Each of Cornell's 26 sports ranked received a mark of 974 or better, with 15 scoring a 990 or above. Five teams received perfect scores of 1,000, with men's golf, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, men's soccer and men's tennis each posting perfect scores. The average of the 26 teams was an impressive 990.2.
