VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Cornell baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-8 win at Binghamton on Tuesday afternoon and the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Big Red improved to 10-23, while the Bearcats fell to 15-23.
A two-run blast by
Ryan Porter to left in the eighth, his second homer of the season, brought the Big Red all the way back from a four-run deficit as the visitors scored seven runs over the final three innings to earn the comeback win. Matt
Barnhorst, Joe
Hollerbach and
Nathan Waugh each had two hits, eight players had at least one and Wills Guy joined Porter in hitting home runs for the Big Red.
Barnhorst was 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and a stolen base from the top slot in the order.
Max Jensen drove in three runs to up his team-high total to 24. A total of 10 pitchers saw action on the mound for the Big Red as everyone got some midweek work, with four throwing hitless innings and another three surrendering just one hit apiece.
A two-run homer by Binghamton's Andrew Tan capped a four-run first inning and put the Big Red on its heels early. The Big Red chipped away with single runs in the second on a Wills Guy homer in the second and a
Max Jensen sacrifice fly in the third and eventually got within 5-3 after the road half of the sixth. The Bearcats added two insurance runs to make it 7-3 in the bottom half of the frame.
From there, it was all Big Red.
Cornell had four hits in the seventh tie the contest, including three consecutive run-scoring safeties - a single by Waugh, a two-run double off the bat of Jensen and an RBI single by
Sam Kaplan. The road team took the lead in the eighth after plating three more, with the big blow being Porter's go-ahead homer to left on the first pitch of his at bat. Three batters later, Waugh added an insurance run with a double to center to make it 10-7.
The Bearcats got one back in the eighth and threatened for more, but the Big Red worked its way out of trouble and retired the side in the ninth to claim the victory. Porter, who hit the go-ahead home run, struck out two to grab the save after pitching the ninth innings.
Evin Sullivan was 2-for-4 and Cavan Tully was 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBI to lead the Bearcats' offense. Binghamton also went deep into its bullpen, using five different pitchers who collected 14 strikeouts against its Big Red opposition.Â
