Seven Binghamton Pitchers Combine to Shutout Baseball

VESTAL, N.Y. — Seven Binghamton pitchers combined to throw a four-hit shutout as the Bearcats defeated Cornell, 6-0, at the Bearcats Baseball Complex on Tuesday evening.

Kevin Gsell and Nick Roselli teamed up to drive in five of Binghamton's six runs on the day. Gsell and Roselli each had two-hit days for the Bearcats (18-10).

Dan McAliney earned his first collegiate victory as he pitched the first two innings for Binghamton, allowing one hit and striking out one. Justin Rosner fanned a team-high three batters in two frames of relief.

Senior left fielder Wils Guy went 2-for-3 at the plate, while reaching base safely in his first three at-bats. Sophomore catcher John Quinlan and senior right fielder Sam Kaplan had the other hits for the Big Red (4-18).

Freshman Beck Urofsky earned his first collegiate start on Tuesday, allowing a pair of runs on two hits in two innings. He also walked two batters and struck out two.

Six other Cornell pitchers came out of the bullpen for the Big Red, registering one inning apiece.

Gsell opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run single back up the middle off Urofsky.

Roselli extended the Bearcats' lead to four in the third inning when his two-run home run was deposited into Binghamton's bullpen in right field.

Despite hitting three batters in the fourth inning, senior right-handed pitcher August Biben evaded trouble by getting an inning-ending strikeout to leave the bases loaded.

Junior Story Kimura also issued a pair of free passes in the fifth — both coming via walks — but the right-hander induced a fly out to keep the Big Red's deficit at four.

Binghamton increased its lead to five in the sixth behind a two-out single by Roselli. Devan Bade set up the run-scoring hit by drawing a walk after senior left-hander Spencer Edwards retired the first two Bearcats hitters.

Tommy Reifler gave Binghamton a 7-0 lead in the seventh with a one-out RBI double down the left-field line.

Game Notes

• Cornell and Binghamton met for the 46th time on Tuesday night. The Big Red is 26-19-1 all-time against its Central New York rival and is 7-4-1 in its last 12 games with the Bearcats.

• Urofsky became the third Cornell freshman pitcher to start a game this season, joining Noah Keller and Ethan Hamill. It is the most first-year pitchers with at least one start in a season since 2014 when Tim Willittes (3), Tiger Smith (2), and Paul Balestrieri (1) combined for six starts.

• With his two-hit night, Guy increased his hit streak to a career-long six games. He previously reached five straight games with a hit on five other occasions. During the six-game stretch, Guy is batting .375 (9-of-24) with four doubles and two RBI.

• Quinlan's lone base hit was his fifth infield single of the season, breaking a tie with sophomore infielder Ryan Porter for the team lead in the category. Sophomore outfielder Jakobi Davis (3) is the only other Cornell player with multiple infield singles so far this season.

Looking Ahead

Cornell will be back in action on Saturday when it opens its three-game Ivy League series with Harvard at O'Donnell Field in Cambridge, Mass. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Sunday's game is slated to begin at noon. All games of the series will be broadcast on ESPN+.
