2008-09 Men's Track and Field Roster
Biography
At Cornell: Eligible for the 2009 indoor and outdoor track seasons, Canaday returns following very strong campaigns in all three seasons during the last school year. Already a qualifier for the Olympic Trials with his gritty 2:21:43 in hot weather at Grandma’s Marathon in June 2007, Canaday resumed summer training and arrived on campus ready to establish himself as a national-level collegian. Starting off the fall season in style with a first-place individual finish against Army to help extend the Cornell winning streak against the Black Knights, Canaday remained the top runner for the Big Red in all but one cross-country race, including setting a fine PR of 24:09 on the fast Pre-Nationals course before thrilling Big Red fans with a runner-up finish at the Heps with a time of 24:41.6 on the Van Cortlandt Park course, becoming the fifth-fastest Cornell runner in history at that venue. Not content with anything short of an appearance at the NCAA meet, Canaday continued with an excellent eighth-place at the Northeast Regional meet at Franklin Park in Boston, running 30:13 for the 9,855-meter course and earning an individual berth in the National Championships, becoming the first runner to represent the Big Red at nationals since Bruce Hyde in 2004. At the NCAAs, Canaday ran a strong, smartly-paced race to place 83rd against the best 255 college runners in the country. His indoor track season included personal bests in the mile, 3k and 5k, and he capped off the season in Barton Hall with a third place in the Heps 5k. Outdoors, Canaday ran the sixth-fastest 10k in school history with a 29:48.70 at the Penn Relays before achieving his finest moment in a Cornell uniform when he became conference champion in that event, taking charge in the final mile and powering strongly to the win, leading teammate Zac Hine to a 1-2 Big Red finish that set the tone for the overwhelming Cornell team victory.
At Sheridan: Canaday finished 13th in the state cross country meet as a senior and recorded best track times of 4:09.2 for 1,500 meters and 8:46.14 for 3,000 meters. A long distance specialist from the beginning of his running career, he also ran a strong 32:05 10k on the road in high school.
Personal: Sage Clifton Read Canaday is the son of Clifton and Pamela Ando Canaday and has an older brother and a younger sister.
