As a Senior (2017-18)
• First-Team All-Ivy (Indoor 4x400 relay)
• Indoor Heps champion in the 4x400 (3:15.89).
• Also took second in the 500 with a personal-record time (1:04.11) in the preliminary heats.
• Earned two wins in the 500 (1:04.32) at the Sunday Invitational and the 4x400 (3:14.88) at the Deneault Memorial Invitational.
• Was 21st in the 800 (1:52.93) at the Scarlet and White Invitational.
As a Junior (2016-17)
• For a second straight year, competed in both the indoor and outdoor Ivy League Track and Field Championships.
• At the indoor Heps, finished third in the 800 with a collegiate best 1:51.42 and was a member of the seventh place 4x800 meter relay team (7:50.29).
• Also won the 500 (1:04.73) and 800 (1:56.34) at the Greg Page Relays and Southern Tier Collegiate Open, respectively.
• At the outdoor Heps, finished seventh in the 800 and ran the 4x800 relay and at the Transatlantic series, placed second in the 800 (1:52.15).
As a Sophomore (2015-16)
• Competed in both the indoor and outdoor Ivy League Track and Field Championships as a sophomore.
• Indoors, finished fourth overall in the 400 meter and qualified for the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
• Outdoors, finished sixth overall at the Heps and was also part of the first place 4x400 meter relay squad.
• Also set a personal best in the 400 at the Larry Ellis Invite when he ran a 48.01 and finished fifth overall.
As a Freshman (2014-15)
• Made his way into the Cornell all-time top 10 in several events as a freshman.
• His 48.31 second-place finish in the indoor 400 at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge was good for No. 9 on the program charts, while his 22.26 time in the 200 earned him the No. 10 spot for that event at the SPIRE Invitational, where his 4x400 team ran for the No. 8 mark, finishing in 3:12.68.
• Also finished second in the 400 at the indoor Upstate Challenge with a time of 49.50.
• Outdoors, his 4x400 team won the Ivy League title, crossing the line in 3:10.90.
• Picked up a win in the 400 at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 48.83.
• At the outdoor Upstate Challenge, both his 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams finished second.
Before Cornell
• Smith was a standout performer from day one at Wayzata High.
• He was a All-Section and All-State selection in each of his four years.
• He helped the team to a Minnesota State Championship his sophomore season, while he led the team to runner-up finishes in his freshman and senior seasons.
• Individually, he competed primarily in the 400, while he also served as the anchor on the 4x2 and 4x4 relay teams. He helped Wayzata to three consecutive state championships in the 4x4 relay.
• In his final two years he also led the team to state championships in the 4x2 relay, including setting a new state record in his junior season.
• Individually, he took home the state championship in the 400 his senior season, running a school record 47.40.
Personal
• Michael Allen Smith is son to Bret and Akiyo Smith.
• He has an older sister Jackie, who graduated from the University of Missouri in 2013.
• He also has an identical twin brother, James, who will be joining him on the Track and Field team at Cornell.
• His father Bret completed his graduate work at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration.
