One of the most gifted athletes in Cornell history, Maduka has been one of the leading scorers and rebounders in the Ivy League over the past three seasons. The 2007-08 Ivy League Player of the Year, she is also a four-time All-American, earning the distinction twice in outdoor track, once in indoor track and once in women’s basketball. A three-time All-Ivy selection for women’s basketball, Maduka is also a 13-time Ivy League Heptagonal champion and was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet at the 2008 Ivy League Outdoor Heps Championships – winning the award for the fourth time in a row, counting her Outstanding Performer honors at the 2007 Outdoor Heps as well as the 2007 and 2008 Indoor Heps. During the 2007-08 season, Maduka finished eighth in the long jump at the 2007 NCAA Indoor championships, 10th at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor championships and 12th overall at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
At Cornell
The first-ever Cornell player to be named the Ivy League Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, Maduka also became the Big Red women’s basketball team’s first All-American, earning an honorable mention nod. The only unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection last season, she finished the year as just the fifth player in Cornell history to register at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 steals during her career and was named the Cornell Sun Female Athlete of the Year. She was named the Ivy League Player of the Week three times and was named to the WBCA’s National Player of the Month honorable mention list for March. Maduka finished her junior year ranking third in Cornell history in career free throws made (339), seventh in career steals (146), eighth in career rebounds (565) and 12th in career field goals made (345). She also moved into the single-season rankings in free throws made (124 – second), steals (62 – fourth) and rebounds (214 – sixth). Maduka finished the year ranked in the top-three in the Ivy League in scoring (14.1 – third), rebounds (7.6 – second), steals (2.21 – first), field goal percentage (.498 – second) and defensive rebounds (5.54 – first). During the 2007-08 season, Maduka saw action in 28 games, making 27 starts, and scoring in double-figures on 22 occasions. She led the Big Red in scoring 15 times and posted a team-high in rebounds in 18 contests. Maduka also registered six double-doubles during the year and had two 20-point performances. She led the Big Red in scoring for six straight games from Nov. 25 to Dec. 29, included in that stretch was a season-high 24 points vs. Bucknell. She finished the year with seven points and a team-high nine rebounds vs. No. 1 Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Maduka earned second-team All-Ivy honors as a sophomore after leading the Big Red in points (13.4 ppg.), rebounds (7.9 rpg.) and steals (2.0 spg.). With her 14 points vs. Columbia on Jan. 20, Maduka hit the 500-point plateau, doing so in the 35th contest of her career, faster than anyone in Cornell history other than the Big Red’s all-time leading scorer Karen Walker. Maduka’s .503 shooting percentage (86-of-171) was good for third in the Ivy League and was the fourth-highest mark all-time at Cornell. She finished the year ranked first in the conference in defensive rebounds (5.95 rpg.), third in steals, fourth in rebounding, fifth in free throw percentage (.784) and seventh in scoring. She led the Big Red in scoring on 10 occasions and grabbed a team-high in rebounds 14 times. She scored more than 20 points on two occasions, including a season-high 27 points at Syracuse and a 21-point performance vs. Ohio State while being guarded by 6-5 All-American Jessica Davenport. She registered four double-doubles on the season and tallied three or more steals in a game seven times. She was named to both the Buckeye Classic and Cornell Classic all-tournament teams. Maduka became just the second player in Cornell women’s basketball history to be named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year. She was also named to the All-Ivy Rookie team, as well as garnering second-team All-Ivy honors. She led the Big Red in scoring, rebounding and steals and finished the season ranked fourth in the conference in scoring with 14.8 points per game and third overall with 7.8 rebounds per contest. Maduka also finished ranked second in the Ivy League in defensive rebounds (5.79 rpg.), fourth in field goal percentage (45.6 percent), seventh in steals (1.75 spg.), and ninth in blocks (0.62 bpg.). During the season, Maduka registered eight double-doubles, scored 20 or more points in a game on five occasions, led the Big Red in scoring in 13 contests and was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week seven times.
At Martin
Maduka was a McDonald’s All-America team nominee while at Martin Senior HS and was ranked the No. 14 forward in the state of Texas by the Texas Roundball Association. Maduka was also a two-time first team all-district selection, an all-area selection as a junior, and was named to the Arlington Star Telegram Super Team as a senior. Maduka won the 2005 Texas state championship in the triple jump.
Personal
Jeomi O. Maduka is the daughter of Charles and Gloria Maduka and is enrolled in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She has two younger brothers, Kodi and Kesi, and two younger sisters, Sobie and Nakachi.
