The number 1 priority of the Sports Medicine Department is the health and safety of the student-athletes.

Cornell University Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Department Mission Statement
The mission of the Cornell Sports Medicine Department is to provide comprehensive medical care and support to Cornell’s student-athletes, enabling them to perform at their highest level while prioritizing their overall health and well-being.  Guided by the five domains of athletic training, we strive to:

  • Promote injury prevention strategies and wellness initiatives for athletes through screening, evaluations, therapeutic exercise and education. [Injury/illness Prevention and Wellness Protection]
  • Deliver timely and accurate evaluation and diagnosis of athletic injuries and conditions through our skilled medical staff. [Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis]
  • Ensure immediate and emergency medical care is available for acute injuries through proper planning, communication and training/rehearsing. [Immediate and Emergency Care]
  • Provide evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation services to facilitate safe return to play for injured athletes. [Treatment and Rehabilitation]

Our goal is to uphold the highest standards in all aspects of sports medicine, enabling Cornell’s athletic programs to achieve excellence through comprehensive medical expertise and resources.

Student-Athlete Information

Injuries/Illnesses:

  • All injuries and illnesses should be reported to your team’s athletic trainer, the athletic trainer on duty, or a Cornell Health team physician.  If you have seen an outside provider, documentation of your appointment(s) should be uploaded to your myCornellHealth.
  • ALL concussions (sport related or non-sport related) MUST be reported to a Cornell sports medicine clinician (athletic trainer or team physician).
  • For athletic insurance to cover an athletic related injury, there must be documentation of this injury in your Cornell Health electronic health record.
  • Final clearance for sport participation is determined by our Clinical Director of Sports Medicine at Cornell Health.


Athletic Trainers:

  • Each team is assigned an athletic trainer and team physician, please refer to the athletics staff directory if you do not know your team's athletic trainer.
  • Please note that all athletes are welcome to walk into Schoellkopf athletic training room during our open hours, for evaluation and treatment, even if your assigned Athletic Trainer is not available.
    • Be mindful of busy times
    • Make appointments with your AT for rehab times


Main Athletic Training Facility:

  • Schoellkopf Hall: 513 Campus Rd- ph: 607-255-4237
    • [Hours of operation M-Th 8am-8pm, Friday 8am-6pm, Weekends-by appt. only]
      • Please check our social media page for changes in hours over breaks.
    • Entrances on the bottom floor:
      • You can enter from outside at the field side or inside at the bottom of the stairs in the center of the building.
    • Please make sure to sign in on the iPad when entering the facility.
    • There is always an athletic trainer on duty during open hours.
  • Other athletic training rooms are for team-specific use and are available by appointment only. These athletic training facilities do not have open hours: Bartels, McGovern Field, Friedman Wrestling Center, & Lynah Rink.
     

Cornell Health:  myCornellHealth

  • Sports Clearances
    • All incoming varsity student-athletes need to go through the Sport Clearance Process, all information can be found at the link provided.
    • Returners should work with their athletic trainer to understand their sports clearance requirements.
  • Cornell Health Appointments:
    • Our staff is happy to help coordinate appointments with a Cornell Health Physician, please contact your athletic trainer or stop by the Schoellkopf athletic training room if you believe you may need an appointment.
    • You can also make an appointment by calling Rachael Lynch 607-255-5156, make sure to tell her your name and sport and she will assist you in making appt. with your team physician, or current provider.


Outside Providers:

  • You are always welcome to use any provider for your injury or illness
    • You can work with your athletic trainer or team physician to connect with local providers or obtain necessary referrals.
  • Please make sure any documentation of outside appointments is uploaded to your myCornellHealth, failure to do this can delay your sports clearance to participate.
  • Final clearance for sport participation is determined by our Clinical Director Sports Medicine at Cornell Health.


Insurance:

  • You must upload a copy of your primary insurance card to your myCornellHealth
  • Athletic Insurance can be used as a secondary insurance policy for athletic related injuries, any questions regarding athletic injury insurance, please contact Charlene Haskell: cmm46@cornell.edu
