The 2010 Big Red
The Big Red had its unexpected run to the national semifinals ended by unseeded Notre Dame on May 29 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md., as the Fighting Irish took the 12-7 victory. Cornell ended its season with an impressive record of 12-6.
The march to the Final Four contained highs and lows for the young team. After losing a heartbreaker to the Princeton Tigers for the first-ever Ivy league tournament title on a buzzer-beating OT goal, Cornell earned an at-large bid to postseason play against Loyola in the first round of the tournament. Turnabout was fair play when Max Feely ’11 shot the game-winning goal in the third overtime period against the Greyhounds to give the Big Red an 11-10 victory. Feely’s goal ended the longest NCAA tournament contest in both schools’ history and the longest game on record in Loyola’s storied lacrosse program.
Leading up to the NCAA Final Four contest with Notre Dame, the Big Red triumphed over Army in a 14-5 victory to advance. In that game, Cornell jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and then used a tremendous six-goal run after halftime to put the game away. Ryan Hurley had four goals and an assist, while Steve Mock tallied three goals. National Attackman of the Year Rob Pannell chipped in two goals and two assists and midfielder Pierce Derkac handed out two assists.
