WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Cornell baseball team returned from Florida and scored a split of a doubleheader against Army on Saturday, taking game one, 10-4, before falling in game two, 4-2. The Big Red offense pounded out 22 hits on the day, led by four hits apiece from
Brian Billigen and
Frank Hager.
Hager and
Mickey Brodsky both picked up three runs batted in on the day, with
Brandon Lee scoring three times. Brodsky also worked a pair of scoreless innings of relief in game one, with the win going to
Corey Pappel, and
Tony Bertucci took the loss in game two despite a solid performance in a complete game.
In the opener,
Kyle Groth wasted no time in getting the Big Red offense going, hitting a home run in the second inning to put Cornell ahead, 1-0. After Army tied the score in the third inning on an unearned run, the Big Red offense erupted for three runs in the fourth inning, all scored with two out. After the first two batters were retired, Lee singled and moved to second on Billigen's bunt single.
Marshall Yanzick was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brodsky, who delivered a two-run single to center to score a pair. Hager then lined a single through the left side to score Yanzick, and Cornell took the 4-1 lead.
The Black Knights rallied again to tie the score at four, with the big blow being Joey Henshaw's two-run double as Army sent nine men to the plate in the inning. But Cornell would again respond quickly, scoring four times in the sixth. Cornell loaded the bases on singles by Lee and Yanzick and a walk to Brodsky, and Hager drove in a pair with his double to left.
Nate David then singled to right to score both Brodsky and Hager, and Cornell took an 8-4 lead. Cornell extended the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, with
Matt Langseth and Lee both scoring, driven in by Yanzick and Brodsky. Brodsky worked two innings of one-hit relief, striking out one, as the Big Red closed the door on Army in the opener. Pappel took the win, allowing four runs on six hits and five walks while striking out nine.
Game two was a more tightly contested affair, as both Bertucci and Army starter Kirk Porter went the distance. Army's Clint Moore got the Black Knights started with a two-run home run in the first inning. Cornell got a run back in the third inning with
Mike Lopez scoring on Billigen's single to center.
Army would add another pair of runs in the fourth inning, with Zach Price driving in both runs, but Cornell would not allow another run in the contest as Bertucci settled in and Cornell got some great defensive play, including throwing out a runner at the plate in the sixth and Lopez picking off Moore at first base in the seventh.
Cornell got a run back in the eighth as
Conor McCabe got a leadoff single and scored on Billigen's single to right, but the Big Red could not get closer, leaving the tying run on first base in the ninth inning. Pappel would take the loss, allowing nine hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts.
The two teams will go at it again on Sunday in another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Doubleday Field in West Point, N.Y.
