ITHACA, N.Y. – For the fourth consecutive season, the No. 13 Big Red heavyweight rowing team has won the Madeira Cup, as well as the James Wray Memorial Trophy, as it swept five races against No. 14 Penn this morning on the Cayuga Lake Inlet.
Cornell edged a hard-charging Quaker Varsity 8 boat to win the Madeira Cup in a time of 5:37.3, while the Second Varsity 8 race proved to be the closest of the day with the Big Red beating Penn by 1.3 seconds. Cornell also took victories in the First Freshmen 8, the Open 4+ and the Pairs race.
The race with the Quakers was the final of the regular season for Cornell, which will now prepare for the IRA Championship, held May 31-June 2, on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
