NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Cornell men's soccer team topped Columbia 2-1 in overtime in its season finale. The win put the Big Red at 11-6 on the season and 4-3 in Ivy League play. The Lions dropped to 10-5-1 on the year and to 5-2 in league play.
This also marks the ninth win on the road of the season for the Big Red, who finished the regular season with a road mark of 9-1.
Charles Touche netted the game-winner with a bar down strike in the 97th minute. The sophomore gathered the ball inside the box and struck the ball across his body to find the back of the net. The goal marked Touche's fifth game-winner of the year, which leads the team.
"This was a wonderful way to end the season," said head coach
John Smith. "In typical fashion, we came back from being a goal down, and scored two very good goals."
On the Big Red's first goal,
Tyler Bagley played a service ball into the box that was initially turned away.
John Scearce tracked down the ball just outside the 18 yard box and sent a rocket past Columbia keeper Dylan Castanheira. The goal was Scearce's fifth of the year and his third tally in the last four games.
The Lions got on the board first with a tally in the 59th minute with a tally from John Denis that snuck past the outstretched
Ryan Shellow.
"I am incredibly proud of the guys performance today," Smith said. "And I am very excited to see what the future holds for this program as we move forward."
Shellow, who collected his 11th win in net this season, had a total of six saves on the day.
This marks the 11th time in program history that the Big Red reached the 10-win mark with the last time coming in 2014 when it posted a record of 10-6-1.
