Jimmy Lannon '12 Signs Professional Soccer Contract With Austria's FC Lustenau

ITHACA, N.Y. – Former Big Red midfielder Jimmy Lannon '12 has joined FC Lustenau 07 of the Austrian Soccer First League.

A team captain his senior year at Cornell and an undergraduate assistant coach during his final semester on campus, Lannon is tied for eighth all time on the Cornell career assists list with 12. He was named to the All-Ivy Second Team in his senior year, a season that saw him earn seven assists and help the team to a school-record 13-game unbeaten streak.

Lannon went on trial with FC Lustenau back in July, and what began as a two-week trial eventually became a full-year contract offer.

“People don't realize how much of an affect they can have on their own lives,” Lannon said. “I was pretty close to getting a regular job and following the standard path and there's nothing wrong with that. But I'm honestly living my dream because I had the support of an incredible family, friends that believed in me and coaches that pushed me.”

Lustenau, which plays in the second tier of Austrian soccer, is currently fifth in the 10-team standings through 19 games of the season. After spending the last few months adjusting to the new culture and environment of Austria, Lannon is set to begin playing with the top team soon. After a winter break, the team resumes action in February.

He is the only American on the Lustenau roster.

“I decided to buy a plane ticket and take a shot,” Lannon said. “I had no idea where it would take me. But I'll tell you this, I can't wait to see where it takes me next.”
