As a quarterback in 1962, Wood was third in the nation in total offense (1779 yards) and fourth in the nation in rushing (889 yards). In 1963, he was first in the nation in kickoff return yardage (618 yards on 19 returns for a 32.5 average) and eighth in the nation in rushing (818 yards). He set five major Ivy League records: career total offense (3,457 yards); career rushing (1,867 yards); single season total offense (1,616 yards in '62); single season rushing (813 yards in '62); and single game total offense (387 yards vs. Penn in '62). In 1962 and '63, Wood was the Ivy League's total offense and rushing leader. In 1963, he was named to the Associated Press to its All-East first team. The AP named him to its All-Ivy first team all three years and honorable mention All-America each of his final two, and he was named by the league coaches as one of the four "Most Spectacular" players of the season. Wood also set Cornell records for career total offense (4047), single season total offense (1779) in '62; career rushing (2156); single season rushing (889 in '62); single game total offense (387 vs. Penn in '62). After graduation, he played professional football with the New York Giants and the New Orleans Saints. He lettered as a center fielder-second baseman-pitcher on the 1962 baseball team. He batted .277 in 17 games and had a six-inning ERA of 1.49.
