Kyle Dake has advanced to the NCAA finals at 165 pounds. No. 1 Dake will face No. 2 David Taylor of Penn State in the last match of the night on Saturday. Dake is 4-0 for the tournament and has not allowed a single point to be scored against him. The Big Red has crowned four All-Americans.
Nahshon Garrett (125),
Mike Nevinger (141) and
Steve Bosak (184) all join Dake in earning All-America status. Cornell is in fifth place as a team heading into Saturday.
In the semifinals at 165 pounds, Dake and Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma State were scoreless after the first period. Dake chose to start the second period down and easily escaped within eight seconds. Neither wrestler scored again in the period. Caldwell chose to start the third period down. Dake muscled his way through the period with huge mat returns to rack up 1:52 in riding time as the third came to a close. With riding time, Dake won a 2-0 decision to advance to his fourth NCAA finals. Dake will face Taylor in the finals. Dake has defeated the Hodge Trophy winner two times this season. Dake defeated the Nittany Lion wrestler in an exhibition match at the All-Star classic, and he tallied his second victory by a 3-2 decision in the finals at the Southern Scuffle. Dake also pinned Taylor at the Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Trials in April.
At 141 pounds, Nevinger took on the seventh seed, Mark Ballweg of Iowa. Nevinger needed the win to become an All-American for the second time. Nevinger countered a shot by Ballweg in the first period for a takedown and added two back points. Ballweg chose neutral in the second . Neither wrestler scored in the period. Nevinger chose down in the third and quickly escaped. The Big Red junior and Ballweg traded takedowns throughout the third, but Nevinger ended the period the victor by a 12-8 decision. Nevinger advanced to the consolation semifinals by winning a 6-2 decision over eighth seeded Nick Dardanes of Minnesota. After a scoreless first period, Dardanes chose to start the second down. Nevinger took a 3-0 lead with back points and rode the Golden Gopher out for the entire period. Nevinger escaped to open the third. Dardanes took him down towards the end of the period, but with 1:47 in riding time, Nevinger won a 6-2 decision. Nevinger will face top seeded Hunter Steiber of Ohio State on Saturday morning.
At 125 pounds,
Nahshon Garrett faced No. 2 Jesse Delgado at 125 pounds in the semifinals. Delgado went on the offense right off the whistle. The Illinois wrestler held a 4-2 advantage after the first period with two takedowns. Delgado chose to start the second down and added a point with an escape. Delgado added two more takedowns in the second. Garrett escaped from his opening down position in the third. With riding time, Delgado won a 10-5 decision. Garrett will compete in the wrestle back on Saturday. Garrett will take on the No. 5 seed, Jarrod Garnett of Virginia Tech in the consolation semifinals.
At 184 pounds,
Steve Bosak faced No. 1 Ed Ruth in the semifinals. With 12 seconds off the clock, Ruth took down Bosak. Within nine seconds, Bosak had escaped. Ruth escaped for the only point of the second period. Bosak chose to start the third period down, but was unable to escape. With 1:51 in riding time, Ruth won a 4-1 decision. Bosak will take on Jimmy Sheptock of Maryland in the consolation semifinals.
The consolation round begins at 10 a.m. CST. The finals will be broadcast live on ESPN at 7 p.m. CST. The finals will begin at 174 pounds and finish with the 165 pound weight class.
