ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell men's track and field won its second meet in an as many weeks in the Big Red's first scored home meet at Saturday's Upstate Challenge in Barton Hall. Highlights included 7 event wins, 24 IC4A qualifiers, and a big-time school record in the weight throw by junior
Bryan Rhodes.
The team scores were the following: Cornell 198, Army 103, Albany 95, Buffalo 73, Syracuse 57, Binghamton 50, Canisius 39, Colgate 17 (Each event scored 8 places deep – 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points). (IC4A) denotes an IC4A-qualifying performance.
The top event of the day was the weight throw, as junior
Bryan Rhodes thundered to a school-record win of 67' 5 1/2" (IC4A). Senior
Stephen Mozia was second in 63'7" (IC4A, #7 all-time at Cornell) and sophomore
Rudy Winkler third in 62' 7 3/4" (IC4A, #9 all-time at Cornell). Freshman
Andrew Robinson placed sixth in 49' 1 1/2".
In the sprints, freshmen led the way as
Ryan Weigel placed sixth in 6.95 (IC4A, 7.02 prelims) and
Brailin Paulino ran 6.96 (IC4A) in the prelims. In the 60 hurdles, sophomore
Wynn Curtis was third at 8.19 (IC4A, 8.38 prelims) and eighth in the 200 with a time of 22.89. Sophomore Tobenah Attah powered to the 400 win in 49.24 (IC4A) in a 1-2 sweep with frosh
Michael Smith runner-up in 49.50 (IC4A). Sophomore
Will Gibson was seventh in 51.09. Senior captain
Francisco Olloqui came in third in the 500 at 1:05.35 (IC4A).
In a thrilling 4x4, freshman anchor
Michael Smith introduced himself as a true player as he brought to the squad to a come-from-behind victory over a fine Army squad in 3:18.09 (IC4A). Splits on that race were: Tobenah Attah (50.6), Cisco Olloqui (49.1),
Wynn Curtis (49.9),
Michael Smith (48.3).
In the middle-distance events, freshman
Alex Clapacs notched his first individual IC4A qualifier in the 800 (fourth place, 1:55.43) as seniors
Sebastian Roemer and
Phelan McCormack were third and fifth, respectively, in the 1000 at 2:31.65 and 2:32.22. Senior captain
David Melly has started 2015 undefeated as he won his third race in as many weeks in the mile at 4:15.80 (IC4A) over a strong Syracuse and Cornell field. Senior
Sam Belcher (fifth, 4:16.25, IC4A), junior
Connor Herr (sixth, 4:16.56, IC4A), and sophomore
David Taylor (seventh, 4:19.73) bunched up in hot pursuit. Junior
Ben Rainero rocketed to a big 3000 win in 8:19.43 (IC4A) ahead of junior
Brian Eimstad (fourth, 8:27.60, IC4A), freshman
Chase Silverman (fifth, 8:28.96, IC4A), and senior captain Jonny Phillips (sixth, 8:36.60).
The 4x8 crew placed 2nd in 8:02.69 with a top split of 1:56.6 by junior
Connor Herr.
In the field, sophomore high-jumper
Joe Mankovecky placed sixth at 6' 6 1/4" and freshman
Myles Lazarou was seventh at the same height. Sophomore
Grant Sisserson again dominated the pole vault at 16' 8 3/4" (IC4A) as senior
Keith Rayburn was third at 15' 9" (IC4A). The long jumpers racked up points with sophomore Wes Northrop in fifth at 22' 6 1/4", sophomore
John Enkler in sixth at 22' 2 1/2",
Myles Lazarou in seventh at 22' 2 1/4", and freshman
Kelsey Nedd in eighth at 21' 9". Enkler came back to snag third in the triple jump (47' 9 3/4", IC4A), ahead of freshman
Oseoba Airewele (sixth, 45' 8") and sophomore
Sean Waterton (seventh, 45' 1/2").
Senior Captain
Stephen Mozia scored another win in the shot at 60' 9 1/4" (IC4A) with freshman
Andrew Robinson in fourth at 51' 11" (IC4A) and junior
Praduman Singh in fifth at 51' 1 1/2".
In the heptathlon, sophomore
Austin Jamerson was second with 5,037 points (IC4A). His performances: 60m-7.31, LJ-23' 3 1/2" (IC4A), SP-36' 7 3/4", HJ-6' 6", 60h-8.51, PV-12' 5 1/2", 1000-3:00.16
