ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell men's track and field posted strong showings during one of its busiest weekends of the indoor season. The Big Red men kicked off the weekend with several great efforts at the two-day SPIRE Invitational in Geneva, Ohio, which is to be the site of the Big Ten Indoor Championships in two weeks. The squad wrapped up the weekend on Sunday when it returned to Barton Hall for its penultimate home meet of the indoor season at the Sunday Invitational.
Overall, the Cornell men combined for 19 IC4A qualifiers, 5 event wins, and 5 all-time, top-ten marks in school history at the SPIRE Invitational. Nationally,
Stephen Mozia moved to #14 on the national descending order lists in the shot put.
In the sprints, sophomore
Wynn Curtis ran 8.31 in the 60 hurdle prelims to place 17th overall, while classmate
Austin Jamerson ran 8.34 for 21st. In the 60 dash, junior
Ryan Hynes and freshman
Brailin Paulino finished back-to-back in 13th and 14
th respectively, posting an identical time of 6.99. Paulino came back strong in the 200, surging to the #8 all-time mark in school history at 22.10 (IC4A) to finish in 20th place, while freshman
Michael Smith tied the #10 mark in school history at 22.26 and freshman
Stanford Cooper ran 22.59. Sophomore Tobe Attah was 18th in the 400 with a 48.70 (IC4A), while senior
Francisco Olloqui ran 49.38. The 4x4 team of Attah (48.8), Olloqui (48.4), Cooper (48.2), and Smith (47.2) ran 3:12.68 (IC4A) to close out the meet with the #8 all-time mark in school history.
In the middle distances, sophomore
James Gowans had a big breakthrough in the 800, running 1:49.78 (IC4A) to finish in 6th place. The time was good for #2 all-time mark in program history. Also in the 800, freshman
Alex Clapacs ran a 1:53.35 (IC4A) to finish 18
th and senior
Sebastian Roemer ran a 1:53.82 (IC4A) to finish in 19
th. Senior
Sam Belcher placed 11th in the 1000 in 2:28.79, as junior
Connor Herr was 14th in 2:30.10. Senior
David Melly set a personal record in the 3000, running a 8:13.14 (IC4A) to finish 12
th. In the 5000, sophomore Da vid Taylor set a personal record time of 14:31.33 (IC4A) to finish sixth, while senior Jonny Phillips also ran a personal best of 14:37.40 (IC4A) to finish 10
th.
In the field, sophomore
Grant Sisserson came within one centimeter of tying his own school record, vaulting 17' 4.5" (5.30m, IC4A) for second place. Senior
Keith Rayburn posted a clearance of 16' 4.75" (IC4A) to finish eighth. Senior Steven Pawlak was seventh in his section of the pole vault at 15' 6.25". Junior
Stephen Afadapa won the high jump with a clearance at 6' 11" (IC4A), while freshman
Myles Lazarou posted a 6' 5" to finish 14
th. Sophomore
Justin Love (6' 3.25") and sophomore
Joe Mankovecky (6' 1.25") added jumps for the Big Red. In the long jump, sophomore
Weston Northrop led the way in 15th place at 21'10". He was followed by sophomore
Ryan Hynes in 16th (21' 7.5"),
Austin Jamerson in 18th (21' 4.75"), and freshman
Alex Rodriguez (20' 9.25"). In the triple jump, sophomore
John Enkler finished sixth in 47' 3.5" and freshman
Oseoba Airewele was 10th in 45' 2.25". In the throws, senior
Stephen Mozia was third in the shot with a long of 61' 11.75" (IC4A) and 10th in the weight (59' 10.5", IC4A). Sophomore
Rudy Winkler bombed the weight 65' 10.5" (IC4A) on his final throw to move to #2 all-time behind only
Bryan Rhodes, who was 16th here in 57'3.75".
Several Cornellians also competed well at the Sunday Invitational in Barton Hall. Freshman
Chase Silverman won the mile in 4:14.69 (IC4A). Sophomore
Wynn Curtis placed second in the 60 hurdles in 8.28 (8.36 prelims); ahead of sophomores
Rachid Zidani in 8.47 to finish seventh (8.49 prelims) and
Austin Jamerson in 8.50 to finish eighth (8.40 prelims). Freshman
Blake Smith placed fifth in the 60 dash at 7.07 (7.18 prelims) and classmate
James Smith was third in the 400 at 50.80. Blake returned in the 200 to place third in 23.39. Sophomore
Will Gibson placed third in the 500 in 1:07.03. Junior
Ben Rainero won the 800 in 1:55.51 (IC4A); ahead of freshmen
Ross Clarke in third (1:56.58) and
Tim Boston in 4th (1:56.90). In the 3000, junior Ty Kawalec ran hard to a runner-up finish of 8:34.04. The 4x400 relay team of
James Smith (51.5),
Lionel Chambers (52.1),
Rachid Zidani (51.9), and
Will Gibson (51.3) was runner-up in 3:26.83.
In the field, sophomore
Weston Northrop was second in the long jump (22' 8") as freshman
Alex Rodriguez was third (22' 7.75"). Olympic alumnus Muhammad Halim '08 returned to campus to win the triple jump (47 '7"), while freshmen
Oseoba Airewele placed fourth (45' 4.25") and sophomore
Weston Northrop place fifth (45'1.5"). Junior
Bryan Rhodes led a one-two-three sweep in the weight throw with a heave of 61'8.25" (IC4A), leading freshman
Andrew Robinson (48' 11.75") and sophomore
Matt Casbarro (43' 5.75"). In the shot, senior
Stephen Mozia moved to #14 nationally with a seasonal best 63' 6" (IC4A) win; freshman
Andrew Robinson placed second in 50' 4" and
Jacob Shaffer was fourth in 44' 3.5". Steven Pawlak placed fifth in the vault at 14 '9", while sophomore
Joe Mankovecky was runner-up in the high jump at 6' 6.25" and junior
Logan Kreglow was fourth at 6' 4.25".
