ITHACA, N.Y. – The throwers stole the show at Saturday's Upstate Challenge at Cornell's Kane Track & Field Complex, setting three facility records and a new school record in the hammer throw. The Big Red men posted 17 IC4A-qualifying marks and three all-time, Top-10 performances in school history. Cornell hosted Buffalo, Canisius, and a small group of unattached competitors.
Senior
Stephen Mozia set a new facility record in the shot in 66' 2 ½" (20.18m, IC4A), winning by over nine feet. Freshman
Andrew Robinson was fifth in 46' ½" (14.03m) and
David Karabinos was sixth in 38' 2" (11.63m).
Mozia then returned to the discus to set yet another facility record (199' 10", 60.91m, IC4A) to win by an astounding 31 feet. Freshman
Jacob Shaffer was the runner-up (158' 8", 48.37m, IC4A), freshman
Rudy Winkler was third (158', 48.17m, IC4A),
Andrew Robinson was fifth (144' 3", 43.96m), Karabinos was seventh (130' 8", 39.84m), and sophomore
Austin Jamerson was eighth (118' 5", 36.10m).
In the hammer,
Rudy Winkler set a new school record for the third time in seven days, setting a new facility record as well in 216' 4" (65.94m, IC4A) in a one-through-four place sweep for Cornell. Mozia was the runner-up (177' 2", 54.01m, IC4A), sophomore
Martin Murillo was third (175' 10", 53.59m, IC4A), and sophomore
Matt Casbarro was fourth (143' 4", 43.69m). Freshman
Mark Zavrl won the javelin in 196' (59.75m, IC4A) to move to #10 all-time in school history. Sophomore
Vince Harnett was second in 174' 11" (53.32m).
Senior
Keith Rayburn continued his great senior year, winning the pole vault at 16' 8 ¾", moving into a tie for fifth-best all-time at Cornell (IC4A, 5.10m). Senior Steven Pawlak was third in 14' 11" (4.55m). Freshman
Myles Lazarou notched another win in the high jump at 6' 8 ¼" (IC4A, 2.04m), above sophomore
Joe Mankovecky in third (6' 4 ¼", 1.94m) and junior
Logan Kreglow in fifth (6' 2 ¼", 1.89m).
In the long jump, sophomore
Justin Love flew to second place in 24' 4 ¼" (IC4A, 7.42m, 5.5 mph tailwind).
Ryan Hynes was sixth (23' ½", 7.02m), freshman
Alex Rodriguez seventh (22' 3 ¾", 6.80m), and
Logan Kreglow eighth (21' 10 ¾", 6.67m). Sophomore
Bobby Plummer made a fine return from injury, taking the triple jump win in 49' ¾" (IC4A, 14.95m), while sophomore
Sean Waterton (46' 11 ½", 14.31m) and freshman
Oseoba Airewele (46' 1 ¼", 14.05m) completed the sweep of the Top-3 places.
Taking advantage of favorable tailwinds, freshman
Brailin Paulino placed second in the 100 in a fine 10.65 (IC4A, 3.2 mph tailwind,) as junior
Ryan Hynes was fifth in 10.88 and freshman
Blake Smith was seventh in 11.19. In the 200, junior
Larry Gibson was fifth in 22.55 and
Blake Smith was seventh in 24.01.
A slew of Cornellians competed at 400, sweeping places three-through-eight: senior

Max Hairston continued his comeback, winning the 110 hurdles in 14.15 (IC4A, 2.7 mph tailwind, 14.54 prelims). Sophomore
Rachid Zidani was third in 14.80 (IC4A, 2.7 mph tailwind, 14.97 prelims), while: sophomore
Wynn Curtis was fourth in 14.92 (14.82 prelims, IC4A), sophomore
Austin Jamerson was fifth in 15.15 (15.04 prelims), and sophomore
Jordan Sherwood was seventh in 15.18 (15.23 prelims). Sophomore
David Karabinos was ninth in the prelims at 16.62, as he prepares for next week's Penn Relays decathlon.
Hairston completed the hurdle double with another win the 400 hurdles at 54.54, ahead of Zidani (55.61) in second and Sherwood in third (55.83).
In the relays, the 4x100 quartet of

Brailin Paulino was runner-up in 42.06 (IC4A). The second Cornell squad of

Alex Clapacs (fourth, 1:58.40). At 1500, sophomore
David Taylor got the pace going with a 2:02 for the first 800 before yielding to classmate
Mark Tedder, who took the win in 3:53.22. Seniors
Phelan McCormack and
Sam Belcher were third and fifth in 3:59.99 and 4:03.72, respectively, as alumnus
Adam Custer placed eighth in 4:07.63 and freshman
Will Ronchetti was ninth in 4:08.61.
